Themes for Non-existing Movies

Jaro Milko's first attempt at composing music using computer software, Themes for Non-existing Movies emerged out of random MIDI note designs and countless editing sessions. Inspired by Umberto Eco's book, Foucault's Pendulum, Milko's concept was to feed a computer called Abulafia with random information to create new connections and textures without hesitation or restrictions.

The resulting compositions were recorded by engineer Luc Montini at Onedrop Studio in September 2005 with members of Carma Star, Fido Plays Zappa, and two jazz horn improvisers: Ueli Pletscher and Andreas Tschopp. But after Milko was unable to find a suitable vocalist to complete the project, the three pieces were shelved while Milko focused on other more pressing works.

Themes for Non-existing Movies was all but forgotten until engineer Luc Montini, isolated in his studio during the 2020 Corona lockdown, brought the music back to life by mixing the tracks as instrumentals. Eighteen years later, the music and vision of Jaro Milko's Abulafia Project is now released into the world, and the themes haven't lost their impact. In fact they seem to resonate more urgently than ever.
